Choosing an anaesthetic technique for caesarean delivery: how the decision is framed
This page is demonstration content and must be reviewed by a qualified obstetric anaesthetist before any real-world use.
Framing the decision
The choice between neuraxial and general technique for caesarean delivery is framed by urgency, maternal physiology and preference, airway assessment, coagulation status, and the indication for delivery. In an examination answer, name the frame first, then walk through it; examiners reward structure.
How to present it well
- State the urgency category and what it permits.
- Summarise maternal factors that alter risk for each option.
- Finish with the plan you would choose and the reasoning, not the plan you think the examiner wants.
Local protocols and current national guidance take precedence over any teaching summary.
